How to Stop Making Excuses and Start Doing
Look, we’ve all been there...
We have a task or project we know we need to do, but we keep making excuses and doing whatever we can to avoid it. Whether it’s fear of failure, a lack of confidence, or just pure Grade A laziness, making excuses can hold us all back from achieving our goals. Every time I find myself in this place of avoiding tasks I follow a six-step productivity framework.
Let's review the six steps you can take to stop making excuses and start doing:
Identify the root cause: The first step to stop making excuses is to identify the root cause. Ask yourself why you’re making excuses and what is holding you back. Once you know the reason, you can start to work on a solution.
Make a plan: Create a plan to tackle your task or project. Break it down into smaller, more manageable micro tasks and set deadlines for each one. This will make the task feel less overwhelming and more achievable.
Eliminate distractions: It’s easy to get distracted by any and everything...social media, emails, or other tasks. I've even had the paint on the wall get me off track (LOL). Set aside dedicated time to work on your project and eliminate any distractions that may prevent you from completing it.
Get an accountability partner: Having someone to hold you accountable can be a great motivator. Ask a friend or colleague to check in on your progress and offer encouragement.
Overcome fear: Fear of failure or not being good enough can hold us back from taking action. Remember, failure is a part of the learning process, and it’s better to try and fail than not to try at all. Everything you know how to do to date, you had to learn and you were probably horrible when you first started. The learning process has not changed, so embrace your imperfections and have fun learning.
Take action: Finally, take action. Start working on your task or project, and keep moving forward, even if it’s just a small step each day.
By following these steps, you can overcome your excuses and start achieving your goals. Remember, taking action is the key to success. So stop making excuses and start doing.
