How To Actually Do The Things You Plan
As women, we’re often juggling a hundred things at once: work, family, friends, hobbies, and trying to stay healthy and happy. We’re also frequently creating plans for ourselves to accomplish dreams and big goals, whether starting a side business, getting in shape, learning a new skill, or pursuing a new career.
But how often do those plans actually get executed?
If you’re like most people, probably not as often as you’d like. It’s easy to get excited about a new idea and start mapping out all the steps to make it happen. But when it comes time to actually follow through, it can be a different story. It's time to change the game.
Here are a few tips to help you turn your plans into reality.
- Set realistic expectations. It's time to stop lying to yourself. Yes, stop it. You know you and you know you're not about to complete the extensive list you've created for yourself. And that's okay! Next, stop over-expecting of yourself. You are one person who needs rest like every other human. This is real life, not a Marvel film. It's more than acceptable and I'm declaring, mandated that you set reasonable standards for yourself that account for rest, relaxation, hobbies, and fun to go with your work.
Often, we expect too much of ourselves and end up feeling overwhelmed and giving up before we even start. Make sure your goals are achievable within the timeframe you’ve set for yourself. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t push yourself, but be honest about what you can handle.
- Break it down. Instead of focusing on the end goal, break your goals into smaller, actionable steps and processes. If you’re trying to get in shape and lose 20 pounds, don’t just say “I want to work out more and eat better.” Instead, plan everything out. Set specific workouts each week and schedule them into your calendar, then actually do the workouts. Create a healthy meal plan each week according to your new lifestyle shifts, and stick to the plan. Outline what needs to be eliminated and what needs to be added to your life and do just that. If you're going to read any books or watch any educational or development videos, then document what you're going to read or watch and make sure to engage fully in them.
- Hold yourself accountable. It’s easy to let things slide when no one else is watching. Find ways to hold yourself accountable, whether that’s checking in with a friend, hiring a coach, or using an app or tracker to monitor your progress. I've phoned a friend a time or two and it's helped me stick to deadlines. I don't seem to mind giving myself excuses sometimes, but for whatever reason, I don't like giving excuses to other people. I've found that I also don't like looking at a written deadline that I've missed, so I do value trackers.
- Celebrate small wins. This one is my favorite and is vital! Don’t wait until you’ve accomplished the big goals to give yourself a pat on the back. Celebrate each small milestone along the way, and use those victories as motivation to keep going. The more you celebrate, the more you will want to celebrate, so you will complete more milestones. Victories of all sizes are worth your time, effort, energy, and resources. Learn to celebrate you and all that you do.
Remember, creating a plan is just the first step. It’s execution and following through that really counts. If you don't execute the plan you will remain where you're starting. You can make your dreams a reality with some patience, dedication, and a little bit of accountability.
